What it meant
ἀλλᾶς, -ἄντος [m.] ‘sausage, black pudding’ (Hippon.). > eETYM Unknown. Kretschmer Glotta 1 (1909): 323 compared ἄλλην- λάχανον, Ἰταλοί, καὶ ἐπὶ τοῦ ἀρτυνθέντος περικόμματος, ἐξ οὗ ἀλλαντοπώλης (H.), and assumes *adAa-fevt-. This would contain an Oscan word; cf. Lat. d@lium ‘garlic’. But Szemerényi Gnomon 43 (1971): 653 notes that origin in southern Italy is implausible for a word from Hipponax. — [Beekes, s.v. ἀλλᾶς, p. 118]
