baSalN bSl [The onion; allium cepa: or onions, collectively:] what it signifies is well known: n. un. with p . (S, M, Msb, K.) Hence the prov., A^akosaY mina AlbaSali [ Having more coats, or coverings, than the onion ]. (TA.) ― -b2- [Also Any kind of bulb, or bulbous plant. ] baSalu Alz~aEofaraAni [ The bulb of the saffron ], which is buried in the ground, is like the baSal [or onion] commonly known. (Mgh.) baSal AlfaA^ori is the same as AlA_isoqiylu and AlA_isoqaAlu and AlEunoSalu , (K in art. sql ,) also written AlEunoSulu , (K in art. ESl ,) or baSalu AlEnSl , (KL voce zyzN , [and so as written by Golius,]) [ Scilla, or squill; particularly scilla maritima, or officinal squill; called by all these names, except, perhaps, AlsqAl , in the present day;] also called ziyzN , and AlbaSalu Albar~iY~u [ the wild onion; but from what follows, it seems that there is a confusion here]. (KL ubi suprà.) baSalu Al*~iy^obi , and bSl Alzyr , (Golius on the authority of Zeyn El-Attár,) or bSl Alrnd , (so in the TA in art. blbs ,) i. q. blbws Bulbus esculentus, (Golius, from Zeyn El-Attár,) or Albalobuws , with fet-h, [thus generally written, though it would seem to be correctly bulobuws ,] the leaves of which resemble those of the sa*aAb [or rue ]: (TA in art. blbs :) the balobuws is the wild onion (in Pers. PiyaAzo SaHoraAy^iY ). (KL voce blbws . [This last assertion suggests that Alzyr and Alrnd may be mistranscriptions for Alz~iyz ; the zyz mentioned before.]) [ baSalu AlqYo'a Bulbus vomitorius; mentioned by Golius; and by Dioscorides, (l. ii. c. 201,) as being emetic and diuretic.] ― -b3- Also, (K,) or baSalapN , (M,) (tropical:) A helmet (M, K) of iron, (K,) pointed in the middle; so called as being likened to what is first mentioned above. (M.) Lebeed likens helmets to baSal . (S.)
