jaraAdN jrAd [a coll. gen. n., (tropical:) Locusts; the locust; a kind of insect ] well known: (S, Msb, K:) so called from stripping the ground, (A, Msb,) i. e., eating what is upon it: (Msb:) n. un. with jrAd : (S, Msb:) applied alike to the male and the female: (S, Msb, K:) jrAdp is not the masc. of baqarN , but is a [coll.] gen. n.; these two words being like baqarN and baqarapN , and tamorN and tamorapN , and HamaAmN and HamaAmapN , &c.: it is therefore necessary that the masc. should be [in my copies of the S, “should not be,” but this is corrected in the margin of one of those copies,] of the same form as the fem., lest it should be confounded with the pl. [or rather the collective form]: (S:) but some say that jrAd is the masc.; and jrAdp , the fem.; and the saying raA^ayatu jaraAdFA EalaY jaraAdapK [as meaning I saw a male locust upon a female locust ], like raA^ayotu naEaAmFA EalaY naEaAmapK , is cited: (TA:) it is first called sirowapN ; then, dabFY ; then, gawogaA='u ; then, xayofaAnN ; then, kuitofaAnN ; and then, jrAd : (A 'Obeyd, TA:) As says that when the males become yellow and the females become black, they cease to have any name but jrAd . (AHn, TA.) [Hence,] Aibonu AljaraAdi , (T in art. bnY ) or Abn AljaraAdapi (TA in that art.,) (assumed tropical:) The egg of the locust. (T and TA ubi suprà.) ― -b2- maA A^adoriY A^aY~u jaraAdK EaArahu , (S, K,) or A^aY~u AljaraAdi , (A, L,) (tropical:) I know not what man, (S, K,) or what thing, (A,) took him, or it, away. (S, A, K.)
