What it meant — Lane's Arabic-English Lexicon

1. جَيِّدٌ

jay~idN jyd , originally of the measure fayoEilN , (S, Msb,) as the Basrees say, i. e. jayowidN , (Msb, TA,) the w being changed into Y because of its being meksoor and preceded by Y , and the augmentative Y being then incorporated into it; (TA;) or, as the Koofees say, of the measure fayoEalN , like EayoTalN &c., because there is found no sound word of the measure fayoEilN except SayoqilN , a woman's name, and the unsound is accorded to the sound; or, as others say, of the measure faEiylN , [and so I find in one copy of the S,] originally jawiydN , the kesreh of the w being, accord. to them, suppressed because difficult of pronunciation, and the quiescent w and Y thus coming together, [the latter receives the rejected kesreh, and] the w is changed into Y and incorporated into the [augmentative] Y ; (Msb;) Good, goodly, approvable, or excellent; contr. of radi Yo ; (A, K;) applied to a thing, (S,) or a commodity, an article of household-goods, or the like, (A, Msb,) and a work, or performance: (TA:) pl. jiyaAdN (S, A, Msb, K) and jiyaAdaAtN , (K,) the latter a pl. pl., [i. e. pl. of jiyaAdN ,] (TA,) and jayaAy^idu , (S, K,) with hemz, [and, accord. to some,] contr. to analogy. (S.) [It is also applied to a man, meaning Excellent, or egregious, in some quality; sometimes, though very rarely, in a quality that is disapproved.]

2. جَيِدَ

1 jayida jyd , (Lh, L,) or jaAda , of the same class as taEiba , aor. yajaAdu , (Msb,) inf. n. jayadN , (Lh, S, A, L, Msb, K,) He had a long neck: (A, Msb, K:) or a long and beautiful neck: (S, L:) or a slender and long neck. (L, K.)

3. جِيدٌ

jiydN jyd , of the measure fiEolN , (Sb, Akh,) or it may be originally of the measure fuEolN , (Sb, TA,) The neck: (S, L, Msb, K:) said by Sh to be used only in praise; and EunuqN , in dispraise; the use of the former in the Kur exi. being ironical; (TA;) but accord. to Esh-Shiháb, the contr. is often the case: (MF:) generally applied to that of a woman: (L:) or the part of the neck upon which the necklace lies: or its fore part: (L, K:) pl. [of pauc.] A^ajoyaAdN (S, L, Msb, K) and [of mult.] juyuwdN . (L, K.) lay~inapu AlA^ajoyaAdi means A female soft in respect of the neck; as though the term jiydN applied to each distinct part of the neck, and the pl. denoted the whole neck. (L.)
