maA * when following kul~ or A_in~a or A^ayona or A^aY~ , if having the signification of Al~a*iY , is written separately. (El-Hareeree, in De Sacy's Anthol. Gram. Ar., p. 67 of the Ar. text.) ― -b2- maA added to certain adverbial nouns is not merely redundant, but gives to them a conditional and general signification; as in A^ayonamaA Wherever; and HayovumaA Wherever, and whenever; &c.: see Kur, ii. 143, 145, &c.: and see De Sacy's Gram., i. 537 and 538. ― -b3- maA While; as in maA dumotu Hay~FA : and as much as; see Kur, lxiv. 16. ― -b4- bimaA Because bimaA kaAnuwA yafosuquwna Because they did transgress; or for that they did transgress. (Kur.) ― -b5- A_in~aka maA waxayorFA , for maEa xayorK . See xayorN . ― -b6- maA is also added to a noun to denote the littleness of that which is signified by the noun; as in A^arabN m~aA Some little want. (IAth in TA, art. Arb .) ― -b7- maA in A^am~aA and A_im~aA (of which latter A_im~aA laA is an instance) I have mentioned in arts. A^am~aA and A_im~aA . ― -b8- baAligFA maA balaga : see balaga . ― -b9- maA A^anota [ What art thou? ] means what are thy qualities, or attributes? (Har, p. 155.) maA rab~u AlEaAlamiyna , in the Kur, xxvi. 22, means A^aY~N $aYo'K huwa . (Jel.) See also an ex. voce faY~ . ― -b10- maA laka signifies A^aY~u $aYo'K vabata laka (IbrD) and may be rendered What aileth thee? ― -b11- $aYo'N m~aA Some particular thing: something. (See A_iyhi .) Also, Any particular thing? (IbrD.) See an ex. cited voce SabaAHN . ― -b12- fatFY m~aA fulaAnN An excellent youth is such a one. (IbrD.) See Kull, p. 336. As long as: see an ex. voce kaAZ~a , and Alt~uroku , and jal~a . ― -b14- Al$~akolu A_ilaY AlT~uwli maA huwa The form inclines somewhat to length; agreeably with a rendering voce EuqorN : see De Sacy's Gr., sec. ed., i. 543 and 539: see also $aYo'N m~aA above: in the Kur xxxviii. 23, mA is redundant, (Bd,) denoting vagueness and wonder, (Ksh, Bd,) or a corroborative of fewness: (Jel:) it means somewhat whether great or little in degree or importance. -A2- maA , the negative particle, followed by a pret., often requires the latter to be rendered in English by the preterperfect: ex. maA raA^ayotuhu mu*o yawomaAn I have not seen him for two days.
