What it meant — Lane's Arabic-English Lexicon

1. مَتَّى

mat~aY * dial. form of mataY , q. v. (K.) It occurs in the following instances: A^alamo tasoA^ali AlA^aTalaAla mat~aY EuhuwduhaA [ Didst thou not ask the remains of the dwelling, when were their times? ] AHát asked As respecting mt~Y in this hemistich, and he answered, I know not. AHát thinks that it is for mataY : or that it may be for mat~FA , inf. n. of mat~a ; and that the meaning may be [ Didst thou not ask the remains of the dwelling, ] whereof the times when men were present there are (or were ) long past, or distant, or remote? but he confesses that he does not know. (L.) MF remarks upon it, that it is very extraordinary. (TA.)

2. مَتَى

mataY * signifies When? and when used to denote a condition: see A^an~aY and A^ayona . ― -b2- Hat~aY mataY Until when? how long? and also until the time when. See Freytag's Arab. Prov. i. 382.
