λάταξ 1, -ayos [f.] “drop of wine, dregs of wine (also in the game of kottabosy (Alc., com.). *VAR Mostly plur. -ayec, sing. also -ἀγῃ. *DER Aatayéw (Luc. Lex. 3), λατάσσω (Dor. vase-inscr.) λάταξ 2, -ayog [f.] name of a quadruped that lives in the water, perhaps ‘beaver’ (Arist. HA). eETYM Unexplained. Perhaps somehow connected with λάταξ 1? Cf. Keller 1909: 186. Like its homonym, this word is probably Pre-Greek. Aatpeveia [f.] - δουλεία ‘slavery’ (H.). eETYM Contamination of ἀτμενία and λατρεία has been assumed, e.g. in Fraenkel Glotta 32 (1953): 24.
