mätarisvan- ın. Name eines göttlichen Wesens, das den verborgenen Agni vom Himmel holt, ihn aus dem Holze reibt, ihn mit den Göttern für Manu formt; auch Geheimname des Agni (RV +, s. Schmidt, BrI 68ff.; jünger [schon in RV 10, 114,1, s. GeRV 111 337, ad 1b? Doch vgl. Renou, EVP 16 (1967) 162] Wind’). - Nicht überzeugend erklärt. Die Tradition sieht in m” eine Bildung mit dem Lok$g von mätär-, vgl. RV 3,29,11 … — [Mayrhofer, s.v. mätarisvan-, p. 374]

mātariśvan m. (mātari; prob. , ‘growing in the m˚ ’ i.e. in the fire-stick, fr. √ śvi) N. of Agni or of a divine being closely connected with him (the messenger of Vivasvat , who brings down the hidden Fire to the Bhṛgu s, and is identified by, Sāy. on RV. i, 93, 6 with Vāyu , the Wind), RV. ; AV.
