Ἀγαμέμνων [m.] the Greek commander before Troy (IL). «GR eVAR Att. vases Ἀγαμέσμων, also Ἀγαμέμμων, -μένίνγυν (Nachmanson Glotta 4 (1913): 246). eETYM Since Prellwitz BB 17 (1891): 171ἴ., a pre-form *Aya-péd-jlwv has been assumed, with the root of μέδομαι. Kretschmer Glotta 3, 330f. zieht dagegen mit Curtius 311 das Hinterglied zu μένος und μένειν, indem er die Form mit -ou- durch eine Art vulgärer Assimilation zu erklären sucht.
