αἱμύλος [adj.] conventionally translated as ‘flattering’, mostly said of words (Hes.); acc. to Guntert 1921: 103, it means ‘wily’; Weiss HSPh. 98 (1998): 31-61 points to the semantics of spellbinding, e.g. in αἱμυλίοισι λόγοισι // θέλγει. «Ὁ» VAR Also αἱμύλιος (Od.). eETYM The suffix is also found in στωμύλος ‘talkative’.
