ἁμαμηλίς, -ίδος [f.] ‘a tree or bush with edible fruits’, probably ‘medlar, Mespilus germanica’ (Hp.). *ETYM Description in Ath. 14, 650 c-e; the speakers are uncertain about the plant, and also about the name: we also find ὁμομηλίς ‘which resembles the μ.᾽, and ἐπιμηλίς. It should probably be analyzed as ‘which blossoms at the same time as the apple tree’. See Stromberg 1944: 32. — [Beekes, s.v. ἁμαμηλίς, p. 128]

ἁμαμηλίς, -ἰδος f. “eine Baum- oder Strauchart mit eßbaren Früchten’, vielleicht ‘“Mispel’ (Hp., Aristomen., Ath.14, 650c—e). Aus der ausführlichen Beschreibung bei Ath. geht hervor, daß die Gewährsmänner über die Bedeutung uneinig waren, und ebenso, daß die Form wechselt (öuounAls, ἐπιμηλίς).
