*ETYM A formation in -avov (Chantraine 1933: 197ff., Schwyzer: 489f.). Although the word has been connected with ν βυτθόν - πλῆθος ‘crowd’ (H.) and » βύττος - γυναικὸς αἰδοῖον ‘private parts of a woman’ (H.), this is only a superficial resemblance in form.
