ἕλϊνος [m., [1] ‘tendril, vine’ (Hell.). < PG(v)> eVAR ἐλενοί: κλήματα τὰ τῶν ἀμπέλων ‘twigs of vines’ (H.). *ETYM The word has been connected with ἕλιξ, ἕλμις, ἑλένη, etc. and mciAéw 2 ‘turn, wind’, from an t-stem; cf. γέλιν (= F-) ὁρμιάν ‘fishing line of horse hair’ (H.). ἕλινος : m. « vrille de vigne » (Philet. ap. EM 330,39); au f. «vigne» {Nic., Opp.). Composés : ἑλινό-τροπος, -pépoc (tardifs). Doublet : ἑλενοί “ χλήματα τὰ τῶν ἀμπέλων (Hsch.) mais Latte corrige en ἑλινοί [sic]. “-ὦ 889 .-- ἕλκω Et.: Thème apparenté au présent εἰλέω 3 «tourner », etc. Un thème en -i- est fourni par la glose γέλιν (—F-) * ὁρμιάν (Hsch.). — [Chantraine, s.v. ἕλινος, p. 352]
