Eust. 711,37 place l'animal entre le νεδρός et l'ÉAxpos (Il. 10,361, A.R., Call., Æl) ; il existe d’autres formes : κεμμάς avec gémination expressive (Q.S. 1,587, AP 9,2, Hsch.), xeupéc (Hsch.) refait d’après les noms d'animaux en -φος, -pds comme γρομφάς.
