VAR Later usually Aev-, see below. eETYM Formation like ἀρτηρία, etc., from an unattested *Aabk-avov (or -ανος, -άν!]). An aspirated by-form appears in Aavydvn: γλῶσσα ‘tongue, language’ (H.). Since there are no certain correspondences (Lith. liauka ‘gland’ has been proposed, but does not convince), and as there is a variant with -x-, Pre-Greek origin is almost certain. λαυκανίη : f. « gorge » (11. 22,325 ; 24,642, repris dans l'épopée hellén. et tardive), généralement avec l'orth. λευκανίη. Soit altération phonétique (Schwyzer, Gr. Gr. 1,198), soit plutôt influence de l’adj. λευκός. Semble dérivé d'un ἔλαύκ-ανον (-ανος, -dvn) et avoir un doublet à aspirée λαυχάνη " γλῶσσα (Hsch.). El.: Ignorée.
