Poll. 2,22, H.); σμήριγγες: πλεκταί, σειραί, βόστρυχοι (H.), see > μῆριγξ. *ETYM Because of its suffix, μήρινθος is probably Pre-Greek. Adaptation to μηρύομαι has also been assumed, a word that was probably inherited.
