fixed up to the middle, μεσσοπαγὲς δʼ ἄρʼ ἔθηκε κατʼ ὄχθης μείλινον ἔγχος drove it in up to the middle, Il. 21.172:—Aristarch. preferred the v.l. μεσσοπαλές, quivering up to the middle (cf. Hsch.); but it is doubtful whether -παλές could mean quivering, and μεσσοπαγής is found in late Poets, as Nonn. D. 1.233.
