What it meant

1. μόλις · molis — Beekes

μόλις [adv.] ‘hardly, barely’ (trag., Att.). «Ὁ» eVAR = μόγις. *ETYM No etymology. Earlier proposals (see Solmsen 1909: 169ff.) are problematic: connection with μῶλος ‘fight’, if from earlier ‘trouble’, is formally doubtful because of the root vocalism; that with μέλλω ‘to be about to do, hesitate, etc’, semantically uncompelling. See > μογέω. — [Beekes, s.v. μόλις, p. 1014]

2. μόλις · molis — Chantraine

… — [Chantraine, s.v. μόλις, p. 726]

3. μόλις · molis — Frisk

μόλις Adv. = μόγις, "kaum? — [Frisk, s.v. μόλις, p. 1222]

4. μόλῐς · molis — LSJ

only just, scarcely at all, not scarcely, quite, utterly

post-Hom. synonym of μόγις, prevailing in Trag., Com., and Att. prose, though in Pl. and later prose μόγις was preferred (in A. the Laur.
