adjective completely calmed, at peace, at rest (as to the distinction of the twofold application see parinibbāna and cp., Mrs. Rh.D. Buddhism p. 191; Cpd. p. 168), viz.
- gone out, or passed away without any remaining cause of rebirth anywhere completely extinct, finally released (fr. rebirth & trans migration), quite dead or at rest [cp. BSk. parinirvṛta Divy.79]. It is usually applied to the Buddha, or the Tathāgata, but also to Theras & Arahants who have by means of moral & intellectual perfection destroyed all germs of further existence.
