τέναγος [n.] ‘shallow water, shallow spot, shoal’ (Pi. Hdt. Th. Arist.). DER τεναγ-ώδης ‘full of shoals, shallow’ (Hell.), -ἴτις [f.] ‘id? (AP), @w (Str, Plu.), -όομαι (Xenocr. apud Orib.) [v.] ‘to form a t., be shallow’. *ETYM Formation like the opposite πέλαγος, and perhaps influenced by it. τέναγος : n., souvent au pl. «eaux peu profondes, lagune », ete, dit pour la mer et pour des rivières (Pi., Hdt., Th., Arist., pap.). D'où τεναγώδης «avec des bas fonds » (hellén. et tardif), -ἴτις f. id. (AP), cf. Redard, Noms en -τῆς 115 ; verbes dénominatifs : τεναγίζω « former des bas-fonds » (Str., Plu.), τεναγόομαι id. τέναγος τι. ‘seichtes Wasser, seichte Stelle, Untiefe’ (Pi., Hdt., Th., Arist. u.a.). Davon revay-&öng “voll Untiefen, seicht’ (hell. u. sp.), -ἴτις f. "ds. (AP; Redard 115), -ἔξω (Str., Plu.), -όομαι (Xenokr. ap. Orib.) ‘ein r. bilden, seicht sein’. — Bildung wie das Oppositum πέλαγος, viell. formal davon beeinflußt. Nach Bezzenberger BB 18, 267 u.a.
