hedera 'ivy' [f. a] (Lab.+) Derivatives: hederaceus 'of ivy' (Cato+). IEW and Meiser explain hedera from the root *ghed- 'to grab' of prae-hendo. Whereas IEW assumes a thematized s-stem *hedes~o-9 Leumann posits PIE *-er-o-. The connection with -hendd is suggested by the gloss Paul, ex F.
