manifestarius 'caught in the act' (PL+). Pit. *en-fristo- 'rushing in'? According to Leumann 1977: 390, manu/ifestus derives from *manu festus with iambic shortening of the first element. If manifestus may be interpreted as 'caught by hand', the meanings seem to point to 'grabbing' or 'attacking' for -festus.
